Dr. Elsakr was the first to implement the concept of Rotational atherectomy for Coronary Intervention when he first came to Volusia County allowing patients who have complex coronary calcified plaque to benefit from the option of fixing their “Coronary blockages” percutaneously instead of having to go for open heart bypass surgery.
Dr. Elsakr is a pioneer of transcatheter aortic valve replacement. He was the first physician from Volusia County to train in Germany for this procedure, and co-start the program at Florida Hospital and has had great success, where patients that had restricted activity because of severely stenotic aortic valve, were able to regain their active life without surgical intervention, and improve their quality of life and long term survival.
Dr. Elsakr is the director of the cardiac catheterization lab and the Interventional Cardiology program at Florida Hospital Memorial.
Dr. Elsakr is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology and nuclear cardiology. He is also on the staff at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona and the Port Orange facility.
Dr. Ashraf Elsakr attended medical school in Alexandria, Egypt. He did his internship and residency at SUNY Health Science in Brooklyn, New York. He received “Intern of the Year Award” in 1989 and went on to be chief medical resident.
He then completed his cardiology fellowship at SUNY Health Science Center and NYU as a research fellow. This was followed by a year of advanced interventional cardiology fellowship at the University of Louisville/Jewish Hospital Heart and Lung Center.
In 1996, Dr. Elsakr went to France “Essey L’es- Nancy” where he trained with the pioneer of peripheral interventional Dr. Michel Henri.
Dr. Elsakr is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology and nuclear cardiology. He is on staff at Halifax Medical Center and Florida Hospital Memorial Center.
He served served as chairman of the Department of Cardiology at Florida Hospital Memorial.
Dr. Elsakr is a strong advocate of healthy diet and regular exercise. He enjoys soccer. He is fluent in English, Arabic and also converses in French. He is married and has two wonderful children
